Welcome to the Scharrer family's real life story! Most of our story is written for, and about, our four kids and the spice they add to our lives. It's our story of happiness, craziness, and sometimes ridiculousness. We've journaled through childbirth, the terrible two's, private school (and our public school experience), an autism diagnosis, medical school, residency, and long-term mission work in Africa.

Now we're following a new adventure, which involves a 45 foot motorcoach, homeschool, and as many ski slopes as we can go down in one year.

A Trip to the Emergency Room... and it wasn't just to see Daddy.

So not only did we all get the stomach flu a couple weeks ago, but we were hit with Pink Eye, Laryngitis, and now a trip to the Emergency Room.

Klaasen was playing in the kitchen this morning while I was doing dishes and he slipped and fell and hit his hear on one of the drawers.  Of course this had to happen on the weekend when Erik is out of town!

After discovering the blood and determining that this wasn't just a little ding, I quickly called Erik (who didn't answer) and my mother-in-law (who is a nurse) and after eventually getting a hold of Erik, we came to the conclusion that I should take him in. Taking three kids to the emergency room did not sound appealing, but luckily we have one of the best emergency departments around (and I'm not biased or anything!).

From the minute we walked in the door, to the second we walked out, volunteers, nurses, and child life specialists were right there to help.

After it was determined that Klaasen needed stitches, they put us back in a room and brought the kids toys to play with, colors with coloring sheets, a movie (of their choice out of at least 100), and food to eat (since we didn't get a chance to eat lunch).  I was so proud of my three kiddos and how well they behaved. I couldn't have wished for better behaved kids.

Klaasen was so good while getting stitches. He didn't squirm or cry. He held real still and let the doctor work. I didn't pass out and I even watched the whole thing!  It all ended up okay and we even had visitors at home waiting for us when we got there. Our family is here visiting from Oklahoma! They are able to stay the entire week and celebrate Thanksgiving with us.

  1. Poor Klaasen! Sounds like he did a great job. And if I was going to need to go the emergency room anywhere in the world (or for any serious illness for that matter:), I would definitely want to be in Rochester!
