Welcome to the Scharrer family's real life story! Most of our story is written for, and about, our four kids and the spice they add to our lives. It's our story of happiness, craziness, and sometimes ridiculousness. We've journaled through childbirth, the terrible two's, private school (and our public school experience), an autism diagnosis, medical school, residency, and long-term mission work in Africa.

Now we're following a new adventure, which involves a 45 foot motorcoach, homeschool, and as many ski slopes as we can go down in one year.

For posts from while we were living in Zimbabwe and updates about our future plans in Zimbabwe, please see our mission blog...

The River

We spent Mother's Day weekend at "The River."  My nephew and his wife and her parents have a place on the Colorado River!  We loved the scenery, the boating, and the swimming.  It was such a beautiful weekend!  My nephew introduced us to scurfing and Erik did pretty good for his first time...

I put together a video of some of the pictures we took and some videos...

Happy Birthday Daddy and Maida!

A surprise birthday for Daddy after he got off work!

We made an "Our Pop Rocks," present with things that had to do with pop (like pop rocks, pop corn, soda pop, tootsie pops...).  The kids loved looking around the store for the word, 'pop.'

SURPSIE!!!!!!!!

I originally bought a birthday cake mix, but at the last minute, changed my mind and quickly made up a recipe for a blueberry cobbler (one of Erik's favorite desserts!).

We went mini golfing after dinner!

Maida had no idea that I was going to decorate for her birthday, too!  She was surprised and so happy when she woke up to everything pink!

She wasn't too sure about playing in the water at first.

Then she met some other girls while sitting by the big fireplace and decided to play in the water with them.

What great Arizona birthday memories!

Maida Lost Her First Tooth!

A couple weeks ago, I made some chocolate chip cookies.  They had a great taste, however, they were as hard as a rock.  Of course we couldn't let them to go waste, so one afternoon after school, the kids and I were pigging out on cookies in front of the TV.   Maida kept complaining that her tooth really hurt when she ate the cookies.  Upon investigation, I discovered that my hard-as-a-rock chocolate chip cookies had caused Maida's first loose tooth!
Several weeks went by.  Maida didn't really love wiggling the tooth, so she told me it was her plan to wiggle it only twice a day until it came out.  By the time we arrived in Arizona, her twice a day wiggling had paid off and the tooth was now hanging by threads.
Maida was searching for a way to get her tooth to fall out.  She tried biting into an apple, but that didn't work.  Auntie Kim came over to visit us for lunch one afternoon and she had the bright idea of trying to pull Maida's tooth out with a tortilla.
Maida bit down hard and clamped down tightly.
Auntie Kim pulled the tortilla out of her mouth and BAM, her tooth came flying out.  In fact, it flew out so fast that we didn't even see it!
At first we didn't think it worked, but after seeing blood in Maida's mouth, we looked again and there was no tooth!  We thought she might have swallowed it, but later found it on the floor.
Maida was a happy girl!   She kept looking in the mirror and jumping up and down.  I think she'll always remember losing her first tooth!

A Five Week Adventure!

It seems that I have some catching up to do!  Here we go...

On April 26th, we headed off on a five week adventure!  Our first stop was Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where we spent some good quality time with Erik's family.  It is always such a short stay there, but I'm thankful for every minute we get with our family.

A cousin Kinley sandwich!

All the great-grandchildren with the great-grandparents!

Torsten sharing some special moments with his Mema and Deda

On Sunday morning, the 28th, we headed for Phoenix, Arizona. It was a looooong looooooooooooong drive!

Erik has a five week rotation here!  We are loving our little condo and the swimming pool.
Walking in the front door. View into the dining/living room.  The kids' bedroom and bathroom is on the left, our deck and master bedroom/bathroom are straight ahead, and the kitchen and laundry is on the right.
Looking through dining area at kids' beds and bath
The kids' bathroom.  It's nice that they have their own full bath!
